Scalar Conservation Laws with Moving Density Constraints arising in Traffic Flow Modeling

We prove the existence of solutions of a coupled PDE-ODE system modeling the interaction of a large slow moving vehicle with the surrounding traffic flow. The model consists in a scalar conservation law with moving density constraint describing traffic evolution coupled with an ODE for the slow vehicle trajectory. The constraint location moves due to the surrounding traffic conditions, which in turn are affected by the presence of the slower vehicle, thus resulting in a strong non-trivial coupling.

Well-posedness of a conservation law with non-local flux arising in traffic flow modeling
We prove the well-posedness of entropy weak solutions of a scalar conservation law with non-local flux arising in traffic flow modeling. The result is obtained providing accurate L∞, BV and L estimates for the sequence of approximate solutions constructed by an adapted Lax-Friedrichs scheme.
Conservation Laws with Unilateral Constraints in Traffic Modeling
Macroscopic models for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic are based on conservation laws. The mathematical description of toll gates along roads or of the escape dynamics for crowds needs the introduction of unilateral constraints on the observable flow. This note presents a rigorous approach to these constraints, and numerical integrations of the resulting models are included to show their ...
A Variational Formulation for a Class of First Order PDE’s
This paper proves that a class of first order partial differential equations, which include scalar conservation laws with concave (or convex) equations of state as special cases, can be formulated as calculus of variations problems. Every well-posed problem of this type, no matter how complicated, even in multi-dimensions, is reduced to the determination of a tree of shortest paths in a relevan...
